About this Morris Eight 8 Tourer, Series 1

One of the great automotive success stories of the Thirties and one of the best-loved pre-war cars, it is no exaggeration to say that the Eight was the car that saved Morris. Small and affordable but with room for all the family, it was far better suited to Britain's increasingly crowded roads than the larger models that had formerly underpinned the Morris range. So successful was it that within three years of its introduction in September 1934, over 160,000 had been sold. Available as a two or four-seat tourer and a two or four-door saloon, the Eight was capable of 60mph and 40mpg from its 23.5bhp 918cc side-valve engine, driving through a three-speed box with synchromesh on the top two gears. It also had effective hydraulic brakes and a good level of equipment, all for the princely sum of just £120 brand new! This very smart 1935 Series I tourer had a starring role in the 1978 comedy-drama ‘All Creatures Great and Small’. It was James Herriot’s mode of transport around the Yorkshire dales. His character was played by Christopher Timothy and while we can’t say that the car featured in quite all 90 episodes, it was very much front of house and gained lots of air-time. The history continues when it was purchased from a museum in 1989 and then nine years later, the owner moved the car through Christies Auctioneers. The previous keeper purchase the car in 2010 and was used for a time. He then commissioned a comprehensive renovation at the Classic Car Centre near Dublin which took place in 2015-16. A documented record of the restoration is on file. They treated it to a comprehensive body-off restoration and repaint and the car now looks resplendent in its attractive blue and black livery. It also had a new hood fitted and a full retrim in blue leather, the work being carried out to a very high standard as witnessed by its condition today. A fun and practical pre-war car, fondly known as 'Nancy' and with a very interesting film career on its CV... https://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/my-first-car-nancy-the-morris-eight-tourer-s-star-role-1-4168045
